Trails Used

Glen Boulder Trail, Davis Path

Trail Conditions

Dry TrailWet TrailMud - Minor/Avoidable

Equipment

Microspikes

Notes

Snow wasn't abundant, only covered maybe 10% of the trail. It was very sticky and the monorail was mostly stable in shaded areas. Microspikes recommended but should hopefully not be needed by most individuals.

Parking

The parking at Glen Ellis Falls is usually suitable, but since it is closed during the spring, there is parking available for free on either side of the entrance alongside rt16.

Water Crossings

One water crossing at lower elevation on the Glen Boulder trail; very manageable, even after a week of constant rain.

Trails Used

Tuckerman, boot spur link

Trail Conditions

Dry TrailSnow/Ice - Frozen Granular

Equipment

MicrospikesIce Axe

Notes

Snow still mostly stable on boot spur link. Some occasional deep post holes. Above treeline, an abrupt transition to dry boulders. We had planned to rappel the steeps if icy (trail is similar to winter lions head) but we just plunge stepped and it was ok.

Parking

We parked at Glen Ellis because all the overflow lots at pinkham were already full

Trail Conditions

Mud - SignificantIce - BlackSnow/Ice - Frozen GranularWet/Slippery Rock

Notes

Warm conditions in the 50s F. Summit winds 40-60mph per observatory. Trails were slushy and messy with hard sheet ice in places. Crampons needed for ascent until above treeline. Boott Spur provided excellent views of Tuckerman's Ravine and Lion's Head Trail.

Trails Used

Boott Spur, Davis Path, Boott Spur Link

Trail Conditions

Ice - BlackIce - BlueIce - Breakable CrustSnow - Unpacked PowderSnow/Ice - Frozen Granular

Equipment

SnowshoesMicrospikesIce Axe

Notes

TRT was bare boots in morning, started Boott Spur Trail in boots but quickly added snowshoes & kept these on (except for the ladder) breaking trail in several inches of fresh snow to and beyond treeline. Used spikes on the ladder and it was fine. Above treeline was a combo of ice, dry rock, and loose snow. Past Boott Spur peak on Davis Path to Lawn Cutoff was drifted, in spots to my knees. We postholed that because in between drifted stretches were stretches of icy rock. We wore spikes going up & crampons going down. Descending Boott Spur Link was tedious. Rock/ice/snow mix above treeline and soft snow below (used crampons & trekking poles, ice axe didn't seem necessary in conditions). Took off the crampons for the TRT but the last mile used spikes because it was getting icy. It is spring in the mountains.
