This was a roll of the dice that paid off big time. I had checked the weather and knew that there was a chance of rain but that never happened. The rain last night made everything wet and I was hoping that the ledges would have dried out by the time I reached them. That sort of happened. Some were dry and some were wet but I have done this trail wet before so it was fine. The trail was wet anywhere that was covered by the trees. The rocks in those sections were also wet. By the time I reached Dicey's Mill to ascend Passaconaway the trail wasn't too wet but the rocks on the steep sections were still wet. Careful footing was needed here. I saw my first hikers of the day as I descended. Dicey's Mill was damp and had great footing and made for a fast descent. This turned out to be a really nice day and the clouds were delightfully moody.

Parking

There was 1 car in the lot when I arrived and they were getting their stuff together to hike. When I returned there were about 12 cars in the lot. Plenty of room for more.

Low enough that I didn't even use the log bridge. I just rock hopped across easily.

Wildlife

Flying things were flying but not biting. I inhaled one which was gross and not recommended. 0/10

Super quiet day out there today, only crossed paths with four people all day. Lovely. Trails in good shape, some small mud spots from recent rain but not a problem.

Perfect weather day! Decided to go counterclockwise to change it up & hopefully avoid the crowds. Dicey’s is a nice gradual climb to the junction. I went right on the loop, as I do love the scrambling to the top. Down to the outlook, beautiful views today. Heard voices to my left & to guys appeared out of the trees having come up the abandoned Downes Brook Slide Trail. I’ve never noticed the herd path before. Many folks coming from Whiteface, as expected. I had the lunch spot solo for quite awhile. Ledges were really dry, I wouldn’t go this way under wet conditions. Took the Cutoff for a change, 1st part of the trail is hard to follow. Lots of leaf cover, I actually ended up in a drainage until I found the trail. There is a small arrow nailed to a tree which helped. I wouldn’t want to come this way in the dark.

Scott needed the Tripyramids to grid out August. I needed Passaconaway and Whiteface. So why not do them together!? Overall a delightful day since we were able to car spot. The less traveled trails (south Tri to Whiteface, Passaconaway Cutoff, Oliverian Brook) are in very good shape with some stretches having a great sponginess to them that was a nice break from more northern roots and rocks. The only bad thing was a fun hiker who said my blue and yellow get up made me look like "Sunshine and Sky", which my knucklehead younger brother decided would be my new name. So that's just great. Do this hike with a friend. Spot a car. It's a big day but totally worth it.

Plenty of parking at 7am, and still spots open in the afternoon.

All were running low and easy to cross.

Only a few, but for the second time this week, one hit my tonsils.

Good signage but im glad i had the narrative from the amc guide because its wilderness area so only a few blazes remain. The trail down to the river was faint but you just head for the water and cross near the concrete pylon on the huge boulder. It was less clear on the return. We were tired. The trails footbed is nice and piney. Bonus! The steep slabs are way up near the top of McCrillis. And this steep section seems to go on forever.

Livermore trail was mostly very gradual, especially once we hit the road section. There was some deep mud but it was avoidable. Mount Tripyramid trail was nice and dry, and climbing the north slide was just as beautiful as when I did it in May. It was very dry so we could pretty much just march right up the middle of it. Kate Sleeper trail was well maintained and easy to follow. Near South Tripyramid, you descend a similar slide to that on Mount Tripyramid trail, which is loose and gravelly. East Sleeper spur is a little tight but easy to follow, and there is a small summit sign on the wooded summit of East Sleeper. Downes Brook trail is a bit overgrown up top, but it widens in the lower forest and is very wide and smooth. The brook crossings (which there are at least seven of) could be tricky in higher water, but that was not an issue at all and all crossings were easy to rock hop. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and felt like fall! Cool, crisp air with a nice breeze too. I could not have asked for a better day.

Livermore trail only has roadside parking, and we were the second car there at 8:30. Downes Brook trail has a big parking lot that can probably hold around 15-20 cars.

Water Crossings

There are many crossings on Downes Brook trail, all of which were easy to rock hop, but would be much more challenging in higher water. There is a section of Downes Brook trail where the trail seems to go down a section of the brook, and this section and at a couple of the other crossings it was hard to relocate the trail after crossing. There was also one easy rock hop at the start of Mount Tripyramid trail.

My route was up Downes Brook Trail and over to Mt. Whiteface, then over the Sleepers and two of the Tripyramids. From there, I went down Sabbaday Brook Trail. That's roughly 15 miles. I saw only two other hikers in the first 9 miles. Kate Sleeper Trail, in particular, feels very remote. I met lots of hikers doing the Tripyramid loop. Then nobody for most of Sabbaday Brook Trail. Of course, there were tons of people enjoying Sabbaday Falls near the end of my hike. There aren't a lot of views on this hike. Probably the best view is looking at Sandwich Dome, Jennings, Welch and Dickey from the South Tri slide. On the other hand, this is a very rugged part of the Sandwich Range. Downes and Sabbaday brooks drain some very steep valleys. I particularly enjoyed the company of Downes Brook on the ascent. Even if you only get glimpses of the landscape here and there, you feel it in your bones. It's a very rewarding hike.

Parked at the Downes Brook trailhead. Although Downes Brook Trail is not very popular, it shares a parking lot with Hedgehog and Potash. I'm sure the lot is busy on a weekend.

Downes Brook Trail crosses the brook at least 10 times. Sabbaday Brook Trail crosses its namesake at least 4 times. These crossings can be difficult in spring or after a heavy rain. All crossings were easy on my hike.

What a great day for these two. The trails are mostly dry with a few wet areas. The muddy spots were far and few between and the mud is mostly supportive. The ledges were nice and dry so no AARP gymnastics were required. Rollins trail is just so pleasant as it meanders between the 2 peaks with great footing. Dicey's Mill has incredible footing that allows for a fast descent. It was great to bump into gridiot friends and catch up a bit on trail. So many happy and friendly hikers out today and it was so nice to get to talk to so many and hear about their various projects. Huge kudos to the Dad and his son that I talked with on the summit of Passaconaway who are going to look into winter hiking this year. :)

The lot was filling up at 7am. When I returned there were open spaces still.

The crossing down low on Dicey's Mill is low enough that you could rock hop it if you didn't want to use the log.

I did not use bug spray and had no issues. WOW!

Made a nice loop up these two peaks with a side trip to the cliffs. Then for a change of pace we took the snowmobile trail back down to the end of Bleknap Mountain Road and walked the road back to Carriage Road parking. Trails were generally dry with areas of mud throughout. The snowmobile trauls were pretty muddy. Lots of recent Mountain bike traffic on the Piper Mountain Trail where it is posted No Bikes. Sweating rocks made for some slippery footing on some of the ledges. Some blueberries are turning ripe and we were able to snack on a few. Mostly sunny hot and humid with temps pushing 90 by midday and a light breeze.

I took Blueberry Ledge Trail to Mount Whiteface and enjoyed the fantastic view from several of view points on the ledges. After the first major ledge with the first real good view I continued up towards Mount Whiteface and that's when I had chosen a section of scramble that was very steep and devoid of any real hand or foot holds. I was basically laying on the rock sliding up higher and until I saw to the left of me there was more reasonable way up. After doing my best, Alex Honold free solo moves I successfully navigated that section of the ledge. AMC should paint a blue blaze on the rocks for the proper path at the very least on that rock scramble section. I went too far to the right side of rock slab. Realizing that the better route was to left of me. Several more ledge scrambles with more views before you summit Mount Whiteface. Then I took Rollins Trail to Dickey's Mill Trail to Mount Passaconaway.Traveling on Rollins Trail to Dickey's Mill trail was not difficult or too challenging. After Mount Passaconawy summit I continued to the loop on Walden trail back down to Dicey's Mill trail back to the Ferncroft parking lot. Definitely not an easy hike for these two peaks., but super happy with the views from ledges and outlooks. I was able to do them today in the hot humid weather which made it more challenging.

Of all the times I have done this route this was by far the best. The ledges were dry and grippy and no gymnastics were needed. The bulk of the rocks were dry and the mud was minimal. Conditions allowed for moving faster and I had good footing for most of the day. I saw 13 friendly and happy hikers and 1 dog. There is water following near the campsites as you ascend Passaconaway that can be filtered. This was just one of those days where I hiked all day with a goofy smile on my face because I was just so happy! Let those ledges dry out after tomorrow's rain and you should have smooth sailing!

There were 3 cars in the lot when I arrived and about 10 or so when I finished and there was still plenty of room to park. There are now TWO porta potties available and the one I used was clean and well stocked.

I used the handy log over the water crossing and it worked great.

Wildlife

I have no clue how this happened but it was another bug free hike. I expect to get slammed the next time I am out. No one, especially me, gets this lucky 3 days in a row.

The last good view on the hike is at the intersection of the Blueberry Ledge, McCrillis, and Rollins trails, 0.1 mile before the summit of Whiteface. Between the summits, I passed two pairs of backpackers on the Kate Sleeper Loop, but didn't see anyone else until I was descending Dicey's Mill. A pair of German hikers complimented me on my jersey, and a trail runner exclaimed "1 pm!" (kickoff) as he passed me. Nice to see some World Cup spirit!

Parking

I was the 7th car in the Ferncroft lot when I hit the trail at 5:45 am. Those before me must have spent the night up at Camp Rich, as I silk blazed Blueberry Ledge and Rollins. When I finished shortly before noon, there were only 2 spots left in the lot.

There is a log crossing about halfway down Dicey's Mill.

Wildlife

Mosquitos lower down. Black flies at the summits. I kept moving, so they weren't too bad. A morning breeze kept the ledges mercifully clear of bugs.

Tom Wiggin’s must be what Kinsman’s Ridge Trail from the tram side must have been like before all of the erosion. If you like a challenge, Tom Wiggin Trail is for you. It’s steep, some loose spots, and generally you won’t see another soul. Hats off to the trail maintainers who keep Dicey’s Mill a dream trip in the mountains. I am always amazed when I hike these mountains on how well that trail is maintained. Rain made ledges on Blueberry Ledge a bit slippery going up. If you are uncomfortable with wet slabs, wait a day or two until the sun gets on them! Rollins Trail is a fun time in the rain and wind. No views so no need to feel like you have to stop to take it all in.

Crossing on Tom Wiggin is doable with questionable steps wondering if you are going to get water running on your shoes or not. Crossed without getting wet. Dicey’s Mill crossing has logs that you can balance beam.

It's starting to feel like summer, but luckily there were some clouds keeping the sun at bay at times. Tom Wiggin trail honestly wasn't as intense as I was expecting. It is steep and unrelenting, but as of now it wasn't very loose, so it was just a steep climb for a mile or so. I could see it being much more difficult with a lot of leaf litter or loose ground and rocks. Blueberry Ledge trail was as beautiful as always and the rocks scrambles add for some fun challenges towards the top. The rock scrambles and ledges start around 3500' and go to the summit. Make sure to continue onto Rollins trail to reach the official summit, which is indicated by a small cairn on the side of the trail. Blueberry Ledge Cutoff was definitely more obscure than Blueberry Ledge trail, and I'm not really sure why anyone would take it other than for Redlining or adding variety to their hike. It descends gradually but is covered with a lot of leaf litter, which makes some section a little slippery. Pasture trail and Red path were both well marked and Mount Katherine offers a modest but nice view up to Mount Chocorua. Red Path had the worst mud of the day and had some big patches that were avoidable but inconvenient.

The Ferncroft road parking lot is large and can hold ~20 cars if parked well, and was about half full at 9:00 and had maybe one or two spots available at 3:00. There are also porta-potties at this trailhead.

The water crossing at the base of Tom Wiggin trail required some creativity, but it was possible to walk across slightly upstream where it splits into two smaller rivers.

Wildlife

I didn't notice many biting insects but there were very annoying and kept flying in our ears and eyes, and swarming when we stopped. I also found a tick so make sure to check!

My route was basically up Tom Wiggan Trail and down McGrillis Trail (not to be confused with McGrillis Path). I followed Flat Mountain Pond Trail back to my bike. Up Tom Wiggan Trail was definitely the right choice. It's very steep and the footing is loose in places. I wouldn't want to descend that trail. McGrillis Trail, on the other hand, is very gradual. Both trails are in the Sandwich Range Wilderness. So blazes are few and far between. Because these trails aren't used much, they can be difficult to follow in places. Great views from the ledges on Whiteface. It's nice to see Mt. Washington holding on to some of the snow from last weekend, but the snow line is definitely lifting.

Parked at Ferncroft with a bike spot at the easter trailhead for Flat Mountain Pond. Ferncroft was busy for a weekday, but there's room for several cars.

Tom Wiggan Trail crosses the Wonalancet River. Because I couldn't find any likely stepping stones, I waded across. Flat Mountain Pond Trail crosses the Whiteface River. That one was easy to hop across.

We went out and back via the Ledges. We were concerned about the difficulty of that. It was slightly muddy but totally avoidable. First 2 miles were relatively easy. The slabs were pretty easy as well before the climb. Once the climb really started, rocks? roots? stairs? YES. Your typical New England Whites. Steep and rugged. The ledges were terrifying going up, but not down somehow. We found them to be easier descending. Once you see where you're going, it's not difficult. Lots of hand holds where you need them most.

This trail is never in a trail report since it's not the popular way to snag Whiteface, so I figured I'd do my part to spread the word. I am not a Blueberry Ledges person so this was the best way for me to ascend Whiteface. The trail is in good shape despite not being heavily used. My only complaint were all of the leaves covering the trail. Got off course twice on the lower section but otherwise the trail corridor is obvious (at least to me). My research said not to do this trail after a lot of rainfall and I see why - significant water crossing and exposed ledges at the top. Since we haven't had any major rain since last week, I had no issues with either. No snow or ice to speak of. Only saw two people all day.

Could be rock-hoppable but I didn't do much scouting on that. I am a shoes and socks off kind of gal and managed to wad across using poles without being knocked over (water was between my feet and knees where I crossed).

I had fun with the scrambles on Blueberry. I'm 5'4" tall and was able to find my way up by staying left, then right, then far left on the major scrambles. Nice views from Whiteface south peak. Filtered water at the tent site near Passaconaway. A few minor muddy and wet areas especially down low on Diceys. A log bridge kept my feet dry on the stream crossing. Snow and ice are gone, my spikes went for a ride. Overall, trails are well maintained.

This was a 38.8 mile (theoretically; this mileage estimate felt conservative) tour of the Belknap 12, plus a few peaks off the beaten path, with 10,750' elevation gain. The beautiful views from Mt. Major and Gunstock Mtn. are well-known, but the Vista Trail (particularly the open ledges south of Piper Mtn's summit) and Mt. Shannon were scenic highlights- definitely worth visiting. Trail conditions were generally excellent, with less mud than anticipated after heavy rain 2 days prior. Almost all of the rock ledges and slabs were dry, which was a good thing, because a few sections (the Quarry Trail, Boulder Trail and Boulder Loop Trail, the steep descent from the Mack Ridge Trail) might have been hazardous with wet rocks. Aside from the expected crowds near Mt. Major, and a few other hikers on the Belknap Range Trail, there were miles of solitude on my chosen route. Full details on Unnecessary Climb!

Biting flies were out in force once the temperature warmed up (mid-morning)- not a problem when moving, but all over you if you made the mistake of stopping. Also found a hitchhiking dog tick at the end of the day.

A beautiful day for a walk in the woods. Met TJ in the parking lot and decided to hike the Blueberry Ledge Cutoff which neither of us had hiked before. What a nice trail! It was covered in leaves so I was happy to be going up instead of down it. Blueberry Ledge is wonderful, as always. There is some icy monorail going down Whiteface which we were able to avoid by walking next to it. The snowy sections were grippy; We both had spikes but didn't use them. Hopefully the rain this week will degrade the ice even more. Headed up Passaconaway was wet in spots. I didn't use the loop as I could see a deep monorail and didn't want to bother with it. Dicey's Mill is fast.

Oliverian, Passaconaway Cutoff, and Square Ledge all bare/wet/dry. Walden Trail had a dusting to 1/2” of snow in the morning but it was gone on the way back. From the view spur near the Passaconaway summit, to the summit, and down about 3/10ths of a mile on Dicey’s had minor stable monorails and some icy patches. Bare/wet/dry from there until about 7/10ths before Whiteface on Rollins. Almost continuous, varied heights of monorail to the Whiteface summit, mostly stable, and with a few bare patches.

These two are still mixed conditions, especially with the spring snow recently. Small patches of ice start at 3300 feet. A stable monorail starts at the big overlook 0.25 miles below the Whiteface summit and continues for about a mile down Rollins trail. From the Dicey's Mill junction to Passaconaway is a mix of ice, snow and trail. Going up the ledges were fine. In other words - I bare booted to the big view point, then threw on spikes until Passaconaway and back down to the Dicey's Mill intersection. Bare booted the rest of the way out. Great to meet some internet friends in real life including Audrey, John, and maybe the Littlefoot crew although I didn't realize it until later.

Hey bear! Ran into a big Black Bear on the way up the Blueberry Ledge Cutoff. Luckily, he seemed very wary of people and even ~60 yards away a strong "Hey Bear" got him moving in the other direction. A very mixed conditions day - raining at the trailhead and snowing higher up and trail conditions were typical for spring. It was snowing pretty hard above 3,000’, and while the ledges were wet, they were not icy. I bare-booted all the way to the Whiteface summit. From there I put on my rock spikes for the slabby sections between there and Passaconaway. There’s still a pretty good, but firm monorail up there too. I was very glad for spikes as there is still a lot of ice under the snow. Things are still somewhat icy on the way up Passaconaway and as annoying as it was, it was good to keep spikes on. I took them off on the way back down before the Walden Trail junction and kept them off the rest of the way. Dicey's Mill is in good shape for this time of year.

Close to summer conditions. Sporadic snow starts after the Tom Wiggins junction but can be easily barebooted on or around until the Whiteface summit. Throw on your rock spikes for 0.75 miles after the summit to cruise on the narrow but solid monorail (one to three feet deep). Snow abruptly ends, and from here on out, along the rest of Rollins and Dicey's, is 99% snow/ice free! Nice morning on the trails, caught a sweet undercast from the ledges.

Sandwich Traverse...started at Oliverian Brook TH, road a bike the 3 miles along the Kanc to Pind Bend Brook TH and locked it to a tree. Bareboots up farther than I should have...you'll want to put spikes on at the Scaur Trail junction. The monorail is consistent and solid, and gets icy near the top so might as well put them on there...it will help you stay on the monorail. Wore the spikes over to S. Try and down the steep part until it emerges onto the slide where there is no snow/ice. Went bare boots down the slide and across Kate Sleeper which has everything from bare ground to 2' deep monorail, but supportive and not icy so bare boots were fine. Microspikes up to the lookout ledges on WF as it is icy in spots, then all the way across the Rollins trail and up Dicey's Mill to Passaconaway. You could have bare booted from the 2nd half of Rollins trail coming from wf to the WF summit, but there is also ice so I chose to keep the spikes on even on the bare sections. A hiker who had come up Walden Trail (back side of Passaconaway) told me he had bare booted it and that the Dicey's Mill trail had much more ice, so I took the spikes off at the lookout ledge on the backside of Passaconaway and barebooted down Walden as well. There is still some ice requiring creative route planning, but I never regretted not having the spikes on. Bare boots the rest of the way down to Oliverian Brook TH. Any monorail/snow was pretty grippy. Grids out the Tris for me and #11 on WF/Passaconaway. Will have to find an excuse to do Kate Sleeper again, one of my favorite trails.

Parked at Oliverian Brook Lot. It is huge (could probably hold 30 cars parked poorly). There were 2 today. We parked well.

Had to go ankle deep to cross Downes Brook about 2 miles from Oliverian Lot on the way out. All others rock-hoppable.

I did not see any fresh tracks today any where even though there were a half-dozen cars parked at Ferncroft. I bare-booted 98% of the hike but the Rollins was the slowest with post-holing and the need for careful foot placement on the thin, weakening mono-rail. The only place I donned spikes was on the upper ascent to Passa. I'm guessing most of that ice will be gone soon with the warm temps. Absolutely beautiful, almost too warm day. Shorts and tee-shirt hike.

Felt like summer today! Was able to bareboot all the way to the ledges. No snow until after the Tom Wiggin junction. Spikes went on from there until about halfway across Rollins. Monorail here is pretty stable, I only punched through a few times. Beginning of Walden trail is a stream. I barebooted up and down but most will want spikes. Dicey’s Mill is snow free for the most part save for a few short stretches near the top.

The first 2.5 miles up blueberry ledge were relatively dry! Some mud/water here and there, but easily avoidable. The final mile was mostly packed snow with some patches of ice and dry. We contemplated using our spikes a few times but managed fine without. There was some old bear scat and fresh moose scat around 3000ft so our eyes were peeled. Great weather for a spring hike!

Slippery in the morning going up Blueberry Ledge. The melting fresh snow made the ledges slippery and hid the ice that was below. fresh snow was balling on my microspikes so I switched to crampons about half way up. stayed in crampons for the trek across Rollins as there was a stable monorail under the fresh snow. some postholes on the sides of the trail that can be avoided. I stayed in crampons for the trip down Dicey's Mill then switched to bare boots shortly after the water crossing. There were wet leaves and standing water for much of the flats. The areas that receive the most sunlight with a southerly exposure are mostly clear of snow. The monorail continues throughout the shady areas especially at higher elevations.

Out and back up to the summit of Whiteface via Blueberry Ledge trail. The trail was a mixed bag of hard ice, packed snow, exposed dirt/rocks, unstable monorail, and ledge. Took my spikes on and off multiple times during the day. The steep ledges were almost fully clear of snow/ice, although there were wet sections where water was running off. I found these wet sections to be very slippery so I recommend avoiding them at all costs.

Spring conditions down low, will be spring conditions above 3000’ very soon. I posted pictures on AllTrails if you want to see the mix of conditions. There is a mix of bare trail, ice, and packed snow. Coverage above 3000’ is pretty good. I bare shoed the whole trail but had to go slower in some area to make sure I was avoiding ice. With the rain and warm temperatures coming this week, below 3000’ could become bare trail pretty soon as long the snow melt doesn’t refreeze after this week.

Overall, conditions were pretty good! Started up around 9 am and bare booted the first mile. The trail got a bit icy at that point. So I put on my Hillsound spikes and kept them on for the remainder of the hike. Heading up the blueberry Ledge Trail, there was a mix of frozen snow, ice, and bare rock. As much as I would have loved to use the televators on my snowshoes on the steeps, the trail was much too boney. The tricky ledges were mostly bare at the start, with sections of frozen snow and ice. Further up, they were mostly covered in frozen snow, making it easier to navigate in spikes. The rollins trail was a frozen monorail all the way to the Dicey Mills Trail junction. And the hike up Passaconaway from the junction was surprisingly easy, given that the steep rock scrambles were covered in a thick layer of hard packed snow with only small patches of ice, easily avoidable. The last two miles following the water crossing on Dicey Mills were slushy over frozen snow.

We expected some bare trail to start but didn't get it. We bare booted the first 1.5 miles and put on Hillsound Pros at the first junction. The trail had packed snow in some places and ice in others. The first ledge was way easier than in previous months. There was thick ice at the bottom, so we hacked at it with trekking poles and made a little step to get up the first part of the ledge. The ledges higher up had more ice but with caution were easy to get up. At the junction with the Rollins trail I switched to snowshoes. There was a breakable crust on top of unpacked powder which made for tedious footing but the snowshoes did well. At the junction with Dicey's Mill trail I switched back into Hillsound Pros. The temps were making the snow sticky and the anti-balling plates were helpful. The colder temps kept the trail pretty firm. Descending we stayed in Pros but the snow was getting increasingly slippery and slushy due to the sun. We took the Pros off for the last mile and just bare booted. The base under held up well so we had no postholing. Another stellar day in the Whites!

The parking lot was plowed with plenty of room. The road leading to the parking area was icy and slushy this morning.
