Trail Conditions
Notes
Walked through Christmas tree farm where active logging occurring. At 0.8 miles where road starts heading away from Sugar Hill, entered open, logged woods and ascended ridge. Took us an hour to reach the summit. Replaced glass jar with a larger one and added a new register. Obstructed westerly view. Descended and contoured around western side of prominence to col, then ascended through another logged area to lookout with nice views of Moose Peaks and into Vermont. Found the glass jar of Winslow Ledge after some searching for the high point. Descended northwesterly toward the ski trails. Nice views of Smarts Mountain to the northeast. As we were about to descend the slope along the gondola we spotted a mother bear and her two cubs approximately 300 ft away down the slope. We hollared and blew our whistle and the three ran into the woods. Halfway down the slope, nice views of Holt's Ledge. Took us 5:30 hrs to hike 5.8 miles with 1250 ft of elevation gain. To avoid the carspot, one could descend Winslow Ledge following the northeast ridge. There appears to be plenty of logged areas as seen on satellite images.
Parking
Left one vehicle at hiker lot of Nunnemacher cabin/hikers parking lot near Dartmouth Skiway - room for 15+ cars. Drove 4 miles down Dorchester Road, past Smarts Mountain/AT trailhead, Reservoir Pond. Turned at ski mobile parking lot on Headwaters Trail. Lot big enough for several cars. We were the only vehicle.
Water Crossings
Small streams here & there easily hopped over
Wildlife
Lots of black flies - a headnet was a must
