Yet another episode of the Thag and Uki show - Thag and Uki cross the border! I was so excited for this hike. I had seen pictures of the boundary swath and really wanted to see it for myself. HUGE thanks to Steve for picking me up at 5:30am, armed with muffins, snacks, and gatorade and doing all the driving. The ATV trail is rough footing. It's steep and rocky with rocks that wiggle but once you get farther up it smooths out. The boundary swath is so cool. It winds along with mostly nice footing and you can see the peak in the distance. We counted 6 hunting blinds and 10 salt licks today and it's just a wild experience. I am so grateful for Steve who makes the long drive for these crazy days to work on a crazy project. So many stories all along the way. The woman at the registration gate did tell us the park will close Oct 3rd for hunting season so we were glad we snuck this one in this month. Such a GREAT day!
Parking
The road initially is not in bad shape at all. The woman at the registration gate asked us what type of vehicle we had because as you continue to drive in, the roads gets rougher. We came in Steve's F-150 so we were all set. There is NO way my car would have made it in. We had printed out directions to the gravel pit from years back and they have re-routed some of the roads in the park so those directions were not accurate any longer. We downloade the Avenza Maps app which was really helpful in finding our way to where we wanted to start.
Water Crossings
There is a tiny stream to cross right at the start of the ATV trail which is no big deal at all. No other crossings.
Wildlife
They were bad along the boundary swath. The breeze helped and we just kept moving.
