Trails Used

Wright Trail : Mahoosuc Trail : Goose Eye Trail

Trail Conditions

Dry TrailWet TrailWet/Slippery RockMud - Minor/Avoidable

Notes

The Wright Trail is natural without any embellishments (i.e. rock stairs, good bog bridges, wood stairs, lots of signage). The trail is marked by blue blazes. At a critical turn left off the old forest road there is a blue blaze on a tree and some small sticks across the extension of the road beyond the path. One group missed these subtle indications of the turn in the trail and continued up the forest road. They eventually backtracked and regained the trail. A couple of other hikers went up the path to the tent site rather than staying on the Wright Trail where it crosses Goose Eye Brook. There is a blue blaze on a tree across the brook. The ledges have a steep pitch and would be challenging in wet or icy conditions. Today the surfaces were dry in the open areas. In the wooded areas the leaves covered some roots creating a slippage hazard. As mentioned above, there are wet muddy spots uphill from the open ledges. Some of the rock ledges on the Mahoosuc Trail up to Goose Eye East Peak were wet and required care especially on descent. Nice Fall leaf color. Great views from the ledges and from Goose Eye West Peak and Goose Eye East Peak. Down low on the Wright Trail there are fine viewing of the small cascades, pools, and rock gorge on Goose Eye Brook. Lots of hikers out today. The majority were from Maine. One man from Quebec was running the Mahoosuc Trail in a day.

Parking

Bull Branch Road is in decent condition. Should be passable for all vehicles. Parking is just beyond the trailhead before the gate.

Water Crossings

Water levels are not high. The crossing of Goose Eye Brook near the tent site is on ledges that were wet. Stepped in the shallow water and found the underlying ledge to be a bit slippery.

Notes

So glad I did this from this side some beautiful water features with the streams and rivers full. Trail is in good condition although it’s confusing with orange and blue blazes on Carlo Col trail. The hut is original with a doorway and skylights. When we got to the AT I wanted to go right to summit Carlo Col but it’s very large boulders with ice between so I wasn’t comfortable taking my dogs up, didn’t want them to get jammed into a bad situation. The AT was fun, lots of varied terrain, when you get a view of goose eye it looks so far away but goes quick until the rungs and ladder. The dogs got around the rungs but I had to help one climb the ladder. Getting to Goose Eye I could see the storm coming in so we left after a quick break. Going down the Summit trail to the Goose Eye trail is very steep and slow going. I believe as soon as we crossed into NH it started raining and the dogs didn’t love it, it was pouring by the time we finished but so worth it, great day.

Parking

Came in from rte 26 after attempting the Berlin end a couple weeks ago and found it locked, Back road is the way in which leads to Success pond road, small lot off the road for 3-5 cars.

Water Crossings

A few no problems crossing

Wildlife

Leaving Oxford there was a fresh herd of black flies but none up there.
